Zilbert Dennis Portwine, 90, of Cheyenne, Wyoming passed into the loving arms of our Lord May 9, 2014 at the Davis Hospice Center. Zilbert was born on January 18, 1924 to Dan and Hattie Portwine, at the family ranch home at Bay Horse, Montana. He attended the Bay Horse School. At the age of fourteen, he left home to herd sheep south of Gillette, Wyoming. In May of 1946, he enlisted in the U. S. Army. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division as a Paratrooper and with the 325th Glider Infantry. When Zib was discharged from the Army, he returned to the family home and ranched with his father. On November 17, 1951, he married Jean Marie Hurley at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Three Children were born of this union. Bill "Skipper", Cheri, and Mark. Zib and Jean ranched on their ranch holdings on Bay Horse Creek for many years. He loved his life on the ranch. Zib had many hobbies. He was an avid hunter, coin collector, and loved his dogs and cats of which he had many. He is survived by a son Bill "Skipper" Portwine and wife Tink of Seward, Nebraska, a daughter Cheri Phillippi and husband Monty of Cheyenne, Wyoming, eleven grand children, and nineteen great grand children. Zilbert was preceded in death by his wife Jean, his son Mark, his mother and father and numerous brothers and sisters. Cremation has taken place at the Schrader Funeral Home. Mass will be held on Friday May 16, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Davis Hospice Center of Cheyenne.
